This year Prequel will run February through May 2018 and will conclude with a final exhibition and catalog in the fall. Eight participants are selected from an open application process via jury and pair with eight mentoring artists (this session’s mentors are included below). Participants are expected to continue making and critiquing new independent and collaborative work while also building their professional development skills. Prequel is an alternative form of education seeking emerging artists of all ages who feel that they are at a point in their career in which they would benefit from both group critiques and individual mentoring.

Prequel is a free, juried artist incubator that consists of weekly critiques and workshops with guest artists, curators, and arts organizers. Prequel takes a durational approach to community development, incubating artists and their ideas over a six-month span that concludes with an exhibition and catalog, with a series of public programs along the way. Prequel was created by artists in order to provide other emerging artists with a supportive environment to make and critique new work while engaging with more experienced artists and organizers to develop clearer narratives regarding their practices, identity, career, and sustainability.

Prequel’s main objective is to create a strong sense of community in our core group and outward among emerging and mid-career artists. This goal in turn raises the rigor of art and criticality in the Pacific Northwest while simultaneously addressing the realities and viability of pursuing a life as an artist in the region. The program is designed to benefit its selected artists and their mentors, along with the broad reach of artists, organizations, and public with whom these selected artists collaborate and have conversations with.
