John Whitten is a visual artist based in Portland, OR. His current work mines survival manuals, distress signals, and stories of misadventure to explore the psychological allure of being lost and excavate the meditative and philosophical implications of what it means to wander. The question of what it means to be a lost soul frames his practice as he searches for the unfamiliar. Driven by a passion for the outdoors, an interest in our cultural fascination with survivalism and a concern for a changing climate, his practice investigates what it means to make one’s way through life.
